(Wuthathi Country, FNQLD and Mabuiag Island, Torres Straits) Safina has been creating artworks for community, corporate, and private projects for 20 years. Drawing on her rich cultural heritage—Wuthathi Country in Far North Queensland, Mabuiag Island in the Torres Strait, and her Scottish and Ambon ancestry—Safina creates vibrant acrylic paintings that weave together stories of culture, faith, family, and community. Known for their flowing linework, bold colour, and powerful storytelling, Safina’s artworks celebrate identity, relationships, resilience, and hope. Through her creative practice, she seeks to foster understanding, encourage healing, and strengthen connections across communities.
This year, Safina presents Seal Maidens, a work honouring the Bunurong women and girls who were taken by sealers and forced into the seal trade. The painting acknowledges their remarkable strength, exceptional knowledge of the sea, and enduring resilience. Despite immense hardship, these women preserved cultural knowledge and family lines, and many are the ancestors of Aboriginal families living in Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia today.
